The best time is when the current subsides, and you can calmly sail into the harbor entrance. If you arrive when the current is strong, it may be advantageous to go to Americahafen as the entrance is wide, and you can easily enter and find calm waters.
Americahafen is a small, easily accessible transit harbor. There is a fair amount of heavy industry in the harbor, and it can be generally turbulent. On the other hand, the harbor fee is inexpensive, paid (at a fixed rate) in an envelope in a red mailbox on the bridge, where the key to the clubhouse is also found. In the clubhouse, there is a single bath and toilet, as well as a skipper's lounge with a small kitchen. Additionally, there is an opportunity for free laundry.
Yachthafen is a larger and more organized harbor. Here, there are excellent facilities, the possibility to refuel with diesel, and the harbor is located at a better distance to the city. There is a great opportunity to take a walk along the promenade towards Kukelbake. Here, the view opens up, and you get a beautiful vista over the Wadden Sea and the entire entrance to the Elbe River.
Within walking distance from Yachthafen, there are plenty of shopping opportunities and stores. And if you take a walk towards the fish halls, you'll pass a well-stocked marine store along the way.
